Salem County Jail Roster

The Salem County, New Jersey Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the local correctional facility. SalemCourt.us helps locate publicly available information on current and recently released inmates. In addition to online tools, data can be obtained through the official website of the Salem County Sheriff's and Corrections Department, by visiting the facility in person, or by calling. The roster allows you to check the custody status, charges, and booking date of a specific individual. The roster is maintained by the Salem County Sheriff's, Corrections & Communications Department, and data is updated as new bookings and releases are processed.

  2. To check state-level criminal cases, use the PROMIS/Gavel Public Access — the New Jersey judiciary system.
  3. If the case involves a municipal offense, try the Municipal Court Case Search.
  4. If the individual has been transferred to a state facility, a search is available through the NJ Department of Corrections Offender Search.

Find Salem Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created each time a person is officially admitted to a correctional facility. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

During the booking process, the following information is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency (city police, sheriff, state police, etc.)
  • Basic demographic information of the detainee

In Salem County, booking records can be obtained in several ways. An online roster, if available through the sheriff's website, displays current data on individuals in custody. For more detailed or archived records, an official public records request must be submitted in accordance with the OPRA (Open Public Records Act). The request form can be downloaded from the Salem County OPRA page.

If a person has been convicted and transferred to a state facility, information about them should be searched through the New Jersey Department of Corrections Offender Search System. The county jail maintains records only for individuals who are or were recently under its jurisdiction.

Search the Salem Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the detainee's last name. If possible, add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Check spelling — even one incorrect letter can lead to no results.
  • If the system supports partial queries, try entering just the first few letters of the last name.
  • For lists without a search field, use the browser's Ctrl+F function (or Cmd+F on Mac) to find the name on the page.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it in the appropriate field. This method provides the most accurate result, as the number is a unique identifier.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of results does not always mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  1. The person has already been released or transferred to another facility.
  2. The name is recorded with a different spelling (e.g., hyphenated or alternative transliteration).
  3. The data has not yet been entered into the system — there may be a delay between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the roster.
  4. The case is confidential or involves a juvenile.

In such a case, contact the correctional facility by phone or in person. It is also useful to check the NJ Courts case database — the case may already be registered in the court system.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Salem

The Salem County Jail Inmate Roster is not an archive of all past detentions. It only reflects the current composition of individuals in custody at the time of viewing.

Update Frequency

Roster updates depend on the internal procedures of the correctional facility. Generally, new records appear within a few hours after the booking process is completed, but the exact interval may vary. Some facilities update data several times a day, others once a day during business hours.

Known Limitations

  • Delay between arrest and publication: the booking process (photographing, fingerprinting, medical examination) takes time, so the record may not appear in the roster immediately.
  • Disappearance of records after release: when a person is released on bail, by court order, or after serving their term, their record is usually removed from the active roster.
  • Transfers: if the detainee is transferred to a state or federal facility, the information disappears from the county roster.
  • Technical delays: data entry errors or system failures can temporarily affect the accuracy of information.

To obtain archival records of past bookings, submit a request through the OPRA procedure. The request is sent to the responsible records custodian of Salem County. A response usually arrives within seven business days, although more complex requests may require more time.
